Your Word Processing Software

Your second highest priority of transcription tools is your word processing software. You need somewhere to transcribe all of that information into and plain old Notepad, Wordpad or even Microsoft Works won't cut it.

I would highly suggest you invest in a good word processing program such as Microsoft Office 2003 or higher. I know MS Word 2007 is available and Microsoft pumps out new versions faster than we're pumping gas at the stations, but as of right now, in 2009-2010, even the 2003 version will do.

Or you can download the free OpenOffice Suite, which is completely compatible with MS Word.

I have the full professional edition of MS Office 2003 on my desktop, which is my primary office computer. I installed OpenOffice Suite on my netbook when I bought it and it works just fine.

Although not quite as popular in the general transcription field, you may need to get a copy of Corel WordPerfect Office if you happen to get a client who still uses WP.

I have one client that wants everything done in WP, including tables, instead of MS Word or MS Excel. No talking him out of it either so I keep both word processing software suites on my computer.

One of the best money-saving tips I can give you when you're first starting in general transcription - you do not have to run out and get the latest version of any word processing or office suite program as soon as it hits the stores. It is not necessary.

For one thing, most of them don't have all the glitches fixed in them yet. They need to be out for a couple of years first so you can install the patches and everything else.

Stick with whatever version you have until such time as it won't do for you what you need it to do, or you're running into a compatibility issue with your clients.

Additional Software Skills:
While you're learning or brushing up on your word processing software skills, don't forget to pick up some shortcut pointers with MS Word Tips. These shortcuts are a must to improve speed and proficiency.
