Your Transcription HeadsetYour third priority of tools, your transcription headset. Believe me, you will not be able to decipher your audio through computer speakers, no matter how good you think they are or how much you paid for them. For a professional transcriptionist, there is no substitute for a good noise-canceling headset.
There are a lot of different headsets out there so your best bet is to look around and find one that fits you and is comfortable for long term wearing. Depending on your work load when you get started, you may be wearing that for several hours a day. Noise-canceling headsets are the most advised type to get. You really want to muffle any outside noises or interferences while you're concentrating on your transcript so make sure your most comfortable transcription headset also comes with the noise-canceling feature. Audio enhancing is another feature I couldn't do without now. Some audio files are recorded with low volume and even though your audio file editing programs can increase the volume, you really don't want to increase it too much digitally otherwise the sound gets distorted. If you have the audio loudness control feature on your headset, you're set to go. I have a Philips headset with really soft, cushy speaker covers and a battery operated loudness control. I don't think I'll ever own another type of headset again.
