What is Podcast Transcription?

I love doing podcast transcription. And if you want to do podcast transcription too, you first need to understand what these small audio files are. Then we'll look at how businesses use them and why they should be transcribed.

A podcast is like a radio talk show except people can download a podcast to a portable media player (like an iPod or other mp3 player.)

Podcasts are normally small audio files posted on a website for business or personal reasons. Most of the time they're extremely clear and high quality and there's usually not a lot of research involved to complete a transcript.

In her article, "Three Different Ways to Explain What a Podcast is Without Saying iPod or Broadcast," Leesa Barnes, author of the book "Podcasting for Profit" explains further what podcasts are:man-on-phone

While many understand that podcasting is a combination of the words iPod and broadcasting, this definition is very misleading.

Because you can listen to a podcast on any device that has speakers and can play an MP3 file, the current definition of podcasting needs to be broadened.

Here are 3 ways to explain what a podcast is that will not confuse someone into thinking they need to run out and purchase an iPod.

  1. Personal On Demand Cast. This term was developed by Jon Watson on his bizpodcast.com blog. He says that Personal On Demand Cast really highlights the strength of podcasting. He can listen to whatever he wants when he wants to.
  2. Presentations On Demand Cast. I developed this term because many podcasts that I’ve listened to are simply individuals who have something to say and are looking for an audience to say it to. A lot of these podcasts are based on a talk radio format and hence the reason I call them presentations.
  3. Publishing On Demand Cast. Lee Gibbons, the CEO of Podango.com developed this explanation for podcast. He explains that because people can deliver content quickly to users, a podcast is simply publishing based on that demand.
Whether you choose one of the terms above or develop one of your own, the time has come for podcast enthusiasts and experts to start explaining what podcasts without the connection to iPod. This will help to shed a more accurate light on what podcasts are so people can better understand them.

Now we'll look at the five main reasons why businesses use podcasts in hard copy format, which is where you come in! Be sure to use some of these points to market podcast transcription in your list of services:
  1. Businesses can make their podcasts available for sale in hard-copy format. There are still a lot of people in the world who would rather read information that listen to it.

Having podcasts transcribed affords business owners to put the transcripts on their websites available to either sell or to download free.

  2. Once the podcast is transcribed it becomes Search Engine friendly, driving more traffic to the business owner's website.
  3. Once the podcast is in printed or text format, it can be translated by non-English speaking visitors to the site.
  4. Podcasts are often transcribed so those with hearing impairments can still get that useful information by being able to download it in printed format.
  5. Transcribed podcasts can be stand-alone website pages and thereby gives the business owner the opportunity to further monetize the podcast by adding affiliate links and Google ads.
So opportunities do exist for getting into podcast transcription. Look for podcast directories. Then check the websites to see if their authors are taking advantage of other revenue generating options by having them transcribed. If you get enough business clients, podcast transcription could be your niche!
