What Office Furniture Will You Need?

When deciding and choosing office furniture for your new home business, you actually want to be more comfortable than you've ever been at a former employer's office. You get to pick out your furniture this time, not a boss, so you need to consider comfort as well as price.

Let's look at your desk space first.

My desk measures just under four foot wide by two foot deep. It has an open space on the right below the desk area, just above a standard letter size drawer. The desktop computer component sits in its own area to the left and I have a hutch for my reference books, stapler and assorted desk organizers.

In the middle of the desk is my flat screen monitor and computer speakers and I still have working room. I also have a pull-out keyboard tray that fits both my keyboard and mouse. For those of you using a laptop system, you may not need the pull-out tray, but you may actually need more desktop space.

You can pick up some nice furniture used at garage and yard sales and always keep an eye out for companies that are closing and need to liquidate their furniture and supplies.

Since being a transcriptionist requires sitting for long periods of time in a chair, hands on a computer keyboard, staring at a computer screen, the two key pieces of office furniture you will need are your desk and chair, the chair actually being the most important.

The size of your office space in your house may be a key factor in how large or small of a desk you'll need. When I had my apartment, I had a really nice desk space with a hutch but it was about half the size and fit nicely into the corner of my dining room. I set my printer on a separate filing cabinet close at hand and used my dining room table for my working area.

Remember to take measurements of your available space first, then take those measurements plus a tape measure when you go shopping for your office furniture. This will save a lot of headaches later on.

Now for your office chair and other extras...
