Finding a Good Office Chair

A good office chair is crucial to your office furniture because general transcription requires sitting for long periods of time, you need to invest in a chair that you'll be comfortable sitting in for hours at a time. And since there really is no ergonomically designed chair that will actually force your body into the correct position, it's up to you to find what position you're most comfortable in that's ergonomically correct for your individual body.

Just like bodies are created different, so are Office chairs so you may need to try out a few in order to find one that's comfortable for you. And finding a good office chair shouldn't be too difficult to do. You just need to shop around. But before start your shopping, familiarize yourself with the different features that are available on different styles of chairs. After you've sat in a few, you should be able to tell what features you prefer and what you can do without.

Backrest Adjustment

A good backrest adjustment can help prevent or even alleviate some of the discomfort that comes with sitting for extended periods of time. Some features of a backrest adjustment include:

  • Backrest height which provides support for the lumbar region of your lower back.
  • Adjustable backrest tilt which accommodates different postures while still keeping good support for the lower back.
  • Horizontal backrest movement which is a different feature from the tilt and provides horizontal, side-to-side movement, making the chair a little deeper for those who need it.

Chair Height Adjustment

The height adjustment allows you to adjust the height of the chair while seated. Usually done with a pneumatic lever, you can raise or lower the seat to whatever height is most comfortable for you.Armrests
Armrests shouldn't interfere with your ability or room to move. For years I preferred office chairs without armrests and have even had my bosses remove armrests from brand new chairs before I could use them.

But if you prefer to have armrests, which I do now due to a physical disability with my knees and need the arms to get up and down from the chair, look for chairs that have adjustable armrests so you can adjust the height and width. Also make sure they're adequately padded for comfort.

Stability

You want an office chair that is absolutely stable, meaning the chair will not be prone to tipping sideways or backwards when you have to lean in it. Look for the five-legged models with rolling casters for the best stability.

Where do you find a good office chair? Watch for sales at department stores, office supplies stores or better yet, look for going out of business and liquidation sales for the best bargains.
