What is Corporate Transcription?

Corporate transcription is by far my favorite type to do. I just love it! The audio material can be from corporate presentations, quarterly earnings release calls when companies announce their financial results for the quarter and year end; teleconferences, seminars, lectures, and conference call transcription.

Here are the main reasons why doing corporate transcription is my preference:
  • The audio is 99% exceptionally clear-corporations take pains to make sure that their recorded material is clean and clear so they invest in outsourcing the recording of their presentations and teleconferences to firms that specialize in producing extremely high quality audio recordings.
  • The speakers know they're being recorded so most of them take pains to enunciate well and speak loudly enough to be heard.
  • Most corporate telecons, presentations or meetings are no more than about one hour in length. And once you get used to the layout and the speakers' voices, the transcribing goes very smoothly and rather quickly too.
  • Corporate transcription is most often the highest paying per audio minute type of work you can get!

How do you get contracts for corporate transcription?
This type of transcription often requires at least two years of provable transcription experience, either on the job from a former employer or good solid references from clients over the last two years.

To do transcripts for corporations also requires the ability to research quickly the terms and phrases that are unique to that corporation's industry. For example, you may do two transcripts one day where one of the corporations is an oil-drilling firm and the other is a pharmaceutical company. The next day you're transcribing a world-wide health spa and later that afternoon you're doing a major retail outlet chain.

Obviously, unless you're a world traveler or had way too many jobs during your career, you're not going to be familiar with every term and phrase you hear. But you must be able to find them quickly. One good thing is that most major corporations today maintain very comprehensive websites where you'll be able to get most of your relevant information.

Now most of this type of transcription has already been outsourced to major companies to handle. They in turn outsource it to home-based transcriptionists. So again, if you've already done this type of transcription on the job for a couple of years, do some research on the Internet to find some of these larger transcription companies.

Check their websites for a type of Employment link and submit a really sparkling Résumé. If you're accepted, you're on your way! If not, you'll know you need to do a little more to land that contract.
