Why You Should Backup Your Computer

As a transcriptionist, there are a couple of excellent reasons you should backup your computer system daily. First, you are probably going to be using different templates over and over for different clients.

If you lose any one of these templates, it could be critical to your production and deadlines because you'll have to find those templates again or recreate them from scratch.

Second, you may refer back to previous documents for industry specific terms, phrases, speaker names, et cetera. If you lose these files, you'll be doing the research all over again to find the material you need to complete your documents.

Essential client contact information could be lost as well or you even could be in the middle of a project, shut it down for the night and something happens to your system overnight - all your hard work is lost.

How and Where to Backup Your Computer
There are different types of backups and different types of devices you can use to put your backup information on such as CD-ROM, flash drive or an external hard drive.

You can perform backups manually, automated or even use the Windows XP built-in program. So take the time to learn about the options that are best for you and make sure to backup your computer on a regular schedule.

More Transcription Tools:
Your Computer System
You need to make sure your computer is up to date, not more than five years old, if that.

Audio Playback Software
Turn your computer into an online digital transcriber unit with this software, headset and a foot pedal that plug into your computer.

Word Processing Software
You need somewhere to transcribe all of that information into and plain old Notepad, Wordpad or even Microsoft Works won't cut it.

Transcription Headset
Don't try to decipher your audio through computer speakers. No matter how good you think they, there is no substitute for a good noise-cancelling headset.

Transcription Foot Pedal
Keep your fingers moving on the transcript and let your foot do the stop-start-rewind on the audio.
